The Cost of Inconsistency

Imagine this … You’ve launched your online business and your starting off with a bang getting your information out there – posts are flying out, ideas are flowing and your starting to see some audience growth.

But then, life happens. Maybe you hit a creative block, you're swamped with other tasks or you lose track of your content schedule.

Slowly, your posting becomes more sporadic, and that once-engaged audience is starting to slip away.

Sound familiar?

I get it. I’ve been there too (more than once!).

But we need to face the truth – inconsistency with your content comes at a real cost.

Inconsistency can be a silent business killer. It can erode the trust you’ve built with your audience, diminish your hard-earned brand authority and shut the doors to growth and opportunities you didn’t even know existed.

But don’t worry!  It’s not all gloom and doom.

Recognizing the problem is the first step to solving it.

In this post, we’re diving into three major pitfalls of inconsistent content creation. And more importantly, we’ll explore practical, actionable solutions to turn things around.

Whether you’re just starting out or looking to refine your strategy, this post will help you get back on track and keep your audience hooked.

So, let’s dig in!

AUDIENCE TRUST + ENGAGEMENT

The Challenge – Eroding Trust with Your Audience

When it comes to building a successful online presence, consistency isn’t just a nice-to-have; it’s a must have.

Imagine tuning into your favorite TV show only to find that it airs at random times, or worse, skips weeks without a new episode. Frustrating, right? That’s how your audience feels when your content schedule is unpredictable.

Inconsistent posting can leave your followers feeling confused and neglected. They may start questioning your reliability or lose interest altogether. This is particularly true for online course creators and coaches, where trust is the cornerstone of your relationship with your audience.

The Impact – Decreased Engagement

As engagement dips, so does the visibility of your content. Social media algorithms favor consistency, meaning sporadic posting can lead to your content being shown to fewer people.

This creates a vicious cycle – less content leads to less engagement, which leads to even less visibility.

But you can turn things around!

The Solution – Strategies for Rebuilding Trust

  1. Establish a regular posting schedule

Start by creating a content calendar. This doesn’t have to be complicated. Even deciding to post every Tuesday and Thursday can make a world of difference. Consistency in when you post helps set audience expectations and builds anticipation for your content.

  2. Quality over quantity

When determining your content schedule, remember, it’s better to post less frequently but with higher quality than to post mediocre content often. Focus on creating content that adds value, solves problems or entertains. Remember, every post is a chance to reinforce your brand’s value to your audience.

  3. Engage actively with your audience

Show your audience you’re there for them. Respond to comments, ask for feedback and engage in meaningful conversations. This not only builds trust but also gives you insights into what your audience wants.

  4. Use tools to stay on track

Leverage scheduling tools like Buffer, Hootsuite, or Meta Business Suite. These tools can help you maintain a consistent posting rhythm, even during busy times. It also makes it easy to batch your content scheduling.

  5. Communicate openly

If there are delays or changes in your schedule, communicate this with your audience. A simple explanation can go a long way in maintaining trust.

By implementing these strategies, you can start to rebuild the trust and engagement with your audience, creating a stronger and more loyal following.

Remember, consistency is key, but it’s never too late to start or to make improvements.

BRAND AUTHORITY + RECOGNITION

The Challenge – Weakening Your Brand’s Presence

In the world of content creation, your brand and your business’s brand are your identity. It’s how your audience recognizes and remembers you.

Consistency in your content is like the rhythm of a song – It’s what people come to expect and enjoy. However, then the rhythm is off, the song doesn’t flow or resonate as well.

The same goes for your brand when your content is inconsistent. It can confuse your audience and dilute your brand’s impact, making you less recognizable.

The Impact – Lost Opportunities for Building Your Brand

Inconsistent content can lead to a lack of clarity about what your brand stands for. This confusion can prevent your audience from developing a strong connection with your brand, which is crucial for building loyalty and authority in your niche.

When your audience isn’t sure what to expect from you, they’re less likely to see you as a go-to course in your field.

The Solution – Strengthening Your Brand Voice + Identity

  1. Define your brand voice

Take the time to clearly define your brand voice. Is it professional and informative, or casual and friendly? Consistency in your voice helps build a recognizable personality that your audience can relate to.

  2. Create brand guidelines

Develop a set of guidelines that cover your brand’s tone, style and visual elements. This ensures that no matter what type of content you create – be it blog posts, podcast episodes, videos or social media posts – it all feels distinctly ‘you’.

  3. Be consistent across all platforms

Ensure that your brand voice and style are consistent across every platform you use. This creates a cohesive brand experience, whether a customer is reading your blog, browsing your Instagram or watching your YouTube videos.

  4. Regularly review and update your content

Your brand will evolve over time, and so should your content. Regularly review your posts, videos and other content to ensure they still align with your brand voice and goals.

  5. Tell your brand’s story

Use your content to tell your brand’s story People love stories, and they can be a powerful way to build a connection with your audience. Share your journey, the challenges you’ve faced and how they’ve shaped your brand.

By focusing on these areas, you can reinforce your brand’s authority and recognition in your niche. Consistency in your brand voice and style not only makes your content more engaging but also ensures that your brand stands out and leaves a lasting impression on your audience.

GROWTH + OPPORTUNITIES

The Challenge – Stunted Growth in a Competitive Online Environment

In today’s digital world, growth is often a direct result of how consistently you engage with your audience.

Think of your content as seeds in a garden. If you water them sporadically, they won't grow as they should. Similarly, inconsistency in content creation can lead to stunted growth of your digital presence, audience and, ultimately, your business opportunities.

The Impact – Missing Out on Potential Reach + Revenue

Inconsistent posting can mean missing out on the chance to connect with new audience members and, potentially, on revenue opportunities.

Each piece of content is an opportunity to reach someone new, to share your expertise and to offer your services or products.

When your content is irregular, these opportunities are significantly reduced. Your audience growth slows and, with it, the expansion of your potential customer base.

The Solution – Strategies for Sustainable Growth

  1. Develop a robust content strategy

Start with a solid content strategy that aligns with your business goals and objectives. This should include types of content, target audience and how often you’ll post. Remember, your content strategy is your roadmap to growth.

  2. Leverage analytics

Use analytics to understand what works and what doesn’t. Platforms like Google Analytics, Facebook Insights and others can provide valuable data about your audience’s preferences and behaviors. Use this data to refine your strategy and make informed decisions about your content.

  3. Plan and schedule in advance

Use content scheduling tools to plan your posts in advance. This ensures a consistent flow of content, even when you’re busy with other aspects of your business. I draft the content and copy for one week of content in a single batch session. I then create the graphics and schedule everything for the week in a second batch session. Once I developed this batching schedule, it allowed me to create all my content over two sessions which reduced the overwhelm and significantly helped with my consistency.

  4. Diversify your content

Don’t put all of your eggs in one basket. Use a mix of content to keep it fresh and engaging. Different formats can attract different segments of your audience. (A side note for my beginners – focus on one core content platform – blog, podcast, video – and 1-2 social media channels to start. If you spread yourself too thin in the early stages, it’ll lead to burn out and overwhelm. You can scale your content platforms as your business scales.)

  5. Engage in community building

Consistently engage with your audience through comments, forums or social media groups. Building a community around your brand not only fosters loyalty but also encourages organic growth through word-of-mouth.

  6. Be adaptive

The digital world is ever-changing, and so should your content strategy. Stay flexible and be ready to adapt to new trends, platforms and audience needs as your business grows.

By implementing these strategies, you can overcome the growth limitations caused by inconsistency. Consistent, strategic content creation is the key to expanding your reach, building your audience and unlocking new business opportunities.
